Home Runs Fuel Softball’s Sweep At Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y.  – Home runs by junior Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.), junior Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.) and freshman Sam Fregenti (Melville, N.Y.) led the Holy Cross softball team to a two-game sweep (8-6, 10-9) over Colgate Sunday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y. With the two wins, the Crusaders improve to an even 4-4 in Patriot League action (8-20 overall), while Colgate falls to 3-5 in the Patriot League (20-10 overall).

Game 1

Colgate took a quick 4-0 lead, scoring two runs in the first inning and two more in the second. Holy Cross began chipping away at the Raider’s lead, with one run in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) led off the inning with a double and scored on a hit by Belanger. The Crusaders scored two runs on four hits in the fourth inning and the Raiders put one across the plate in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Holy Cross tied the game later in the inning and then took the lead in the sixth inning when Fleming hit a two-run home run and Fregenti blasted a solo shot. One more run in the top of the inning by the Raiders brought the score within two, but the Crusaders held on, winning 8-6.

Belanger pitched all seven innings, giving up 11 hits and striking out three batters. The Crusaders scored eight runs on 12 hits and made one error, while the Raiders scored six runs on 11 hits and had two errors.

Game 2

With two runners on base in the second inning, Belanger hit her first home run of the season to give the Crusaders a 3-0 lead. The Raiders scored in the top of the third, but Fregenti silenced their rally with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to give Holy Cross a 5-1 lead. Colgate rallied again for three runs in the fourth inning, but once more the Crusaders answered back in the bottom of the inning with four runs on a grand slam by Fleming. Another big inning by the Raiders in the fifth inning tied the game 9-9, but Holy Cross scored in the sixth to win the game 10-9.

Junior Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) earned the win for the Crusaders, pitching three innings and giving up three runs on two hits. Freshman Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) made the start, pitching four innings and allowing six runs on five hits. Holy Cross scored 10 runs on 10 hits and made one error, while the Raiders scored nine runs on seven hits and made three errors.

The Crusaders return to Freshman Field for a doubleheader with Siena on Tuesday, April 13. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
