Holy Cross Softball Drops Two At Colgate
HAMILTON, N.Y. – A late inning rally fell short as the Holy Cross softball team lost 9-8 to Colgate in the second game of a Patriot League doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y. The Crusaders fell 8-2 in the day’s first game, slipping to 6-20 for the season (2-4 Patriot League). With the sweep, the Raiders improve to 20-8 overall (3-4 Patriot League.
Holy Cross tied the game 1-1 in the second inning when sophomore Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.) scored on a ground out by junior Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.). The Raiders regained the lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the second, but junior Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.) brought the Crusaders within one with a solo home run in the third inning. Colgate scored three runs in the fifth inning and added two more in the sixth to win the game 8-2.
Belanger pitched five innings for the Crusaders, allowing 10 hits and striking out two batters. Junior Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) pitched the final inning for the Crusaders, striking out one batter and allowing one hit. Colgate scored eight runs on eleven hits and committed one error, while the Crusaders scored two runs on seven hits and committed four errors.
Colgate owned a 6-0 lead after the first two innings of play. Holy Cross put two runs on the board in the third inning when junior Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) hit a two-run home run to center field. The Raiders added a run in the bottom in the inning, but a three-run home run by junior Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) in the fifth inning cut into Colgate’s lead. Holy Cross scored again in the sixth inning to bring the score within one, but Colgate answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to maintain the lead. A rally in the seventh inning put two runs across the plate, but the Crusaders couldn’t get any closer, falling 9-8.
Alexander started the game, but was relieved by freshman Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.). Legros pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Colgate scored nine runs on 12 hits and had two errors, while the Crusaders scored eight runs on 12 hits and had just one error.
Holy Cross will take the field against Colgate for the second day of Patriot League play tomorrow, April 11. The first pitch of game one is schedule for 12:00 p.m.
