Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's soccer team was voted seventh by the league's head coaches and sports information directors in this season's conference preseason poll, as announced today by league officials. The Crusaders, who are coming off a 3-13-0 (2-5-0/seventh Patriot League) campaign a year ago, received 23 total votes.
Defending league champion, Colgate University, earned 14 of 16 first-place votes in the poll, which does not allow coaches or SIDs to vote for their own team. CU's 98 points topped Lehigh's 73. The Mountain Hawks picked up the remaining two first-place votes. Following Lehigh was American with 70 points, Navy with 69 and Army with 57. Rounding out the poll were Bucknell (40 points), Holy Cross (23) and Lafayette (18).
Holy Cross, which last won the Patriot League Tournament in 2000, is returning 16 letterwinners and seven starters from a year ago, including four of the team's top five scorers from a year ago. Junior forward Meredith Davis (Worcester, Mass.) led the Crusaders with 12 points in 2004, while Lauren Pereira (Ludlow, Mass.), Alison Peters (Bolton, Mass.) and Allison Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y.) are all back in uniform.
The Crusaders are still a year away from beginning play at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium, a 1,250-seat natural grass facility that will be located behind the Hart Center. When completed, the facility will be equipped with a press box, lights and a scoreboard. The Crusaders start the 2005 season with a 4:00 p.m. home game against Northeastern on Friday, August 26. Patriot League competition for the Crusaders begins on Friday, September 30, with a 7:00 p.m. game at Army.
