Crusaders unable to hold off the Gaels

New Rochelle, N.Y. - The Holy Cross women's soccer team fell short to Iona College when it was shutout, 0-2, Tuesday afternoon at Marzella Field.

Junior Allison Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y.) and sophomore Lauren Pereira (Ludlow, Mass.) each had two shots on goal to lead the team.

Freshman keeper Jessica Pietrowicz (Worcester, Mass) stopped six shots in 90 minutes of action.

Iona netminder Jessica Martin (Demarest, N.J.) stopped five shots to pick up her first collegiate win and shutout. Sophomore midfielder Sherry Black's ( Fairfield , Conn. ) goal in the first half proved to be the game-winner for the Gaels ( 1-4-1 ).

In the second half Iona 's Eleri Earnshaw (Rhyl, Wales) centered the ball in the box for freshman Brianna Gilmartin (Holmdel, N.J.) to head it in for an insurance goal at the 48.43 mark.

Sophomore Christine Watson (Avon , Conn.) added one shot on goal for Holy Cross .

The Crusaders, who fall to 1-4 overall, return to action on Monday, Sept. 20 when they travel to Boston to take on in-state rival Northeastern at 6 p.m. The Crusaders next home game is slated for Saturday, Sept. 25 against Patriot League rival American at 1 p.m.
