Nov. 1, 2008
WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Casey Boland (Langhorne, Pa.) recorded her first career hat trick as the Holy Cross women's soccer team shut out Lafayette, 4-0, in Patriot League action Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Crusaders complete the 2008 season 4-14-1 (2-4-1 Patriot League), while the Leopards close out the season 2-14-2 (0-7-0 Patriot League).
Boland led the way for the Crusaders, scoring the first goal of the afternoon at the 4:38 mark off a pass from freshman Kelsey Dillon (Barrington, R.I.). Boland drew Lafayette's goal keeper, Allison Malloy, away from the net and put the shot in the goal.
The Crusaders went ahead, 2-0, when junior Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) scored her seventh goal of the season. Stand took a pass from Boland and scored in the lower corner of the net. The assist was Boland's second assist of the season, giving her seven career assists as a Crusader.
Holy Cross continued to control the game when, in the second half, Boland scored her second goal of the game off a penalty kick. Boland put the game out of reach for the Leopards when she scored her third goal of the afternoon, putting Holy Cross up 4-0. Boland received the pass from sophomore Lauren Wright (Biglerville, Pa.) and again faked out Malloy to score the goal. Boland completes her career at Holy Cross with 14 goals.
Sophomore Mary Ferketic (West Hartford, Conn.) earned her first career win at goal for the Crusaders. She combined with junior Jessica Stone (Rockville, Md.) to shut out the Leopards, giving up no goals on six shots. Both goalkeepers had two saves. Malloy allowed four goals on 15 Holy Cross shots with two saves.
Seniors Boland and Tracy Koval (Syracuse, N.Y.) were honored at the start of the game for their careers as members of the Holy Cross women's soccer team. Boland finishes her career at Holy Cross ninth on the career points and goals record list.
