Easton, Pa.- Junior Lauren Pereira (Ludlow, Mass.) scored the game winning goal and also added an assist as the Holy Cross women's soccer team defeated Lafayette, 2-1, in Patriot League action, on Saturday afternoon at Metzgar Field Athletics Complex. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 3-11 overall (1-3 PL), while the Leopards fall to 1-9-3 overall (0-4 PL).
The Crusaders got on the board first at the 23:09 mark when sophomore Meighan Kelly (Colts Neck, N.J.) received a long pass from Pereira and then put the ball into an open net. Pereira increased the Holy Cross lead to 2-0 at the 37:08 mark, when she scored a goal off a cross from senior Allison Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y.) into the low far post of the net. Pereira leads the Crusaders in scoring with four goals and two assists for 10 points.
In the second half, the Leopards scored their only goal of the game as they cut the Crusaders lead in half at the 65:22 mark, when Jenny Polak received a through ball from Caroline Tuttle and shot the ball into the low far post. Sophomore goalie Jessica Pietrowicz (Worcester, Mass.) was able to keep Lafayette off the scoreboard the rest of the way as she made six saves in the game for the win. Lafayette goalie Mary Kate Erdman stopped eight shots. Holy Cross out shot Lafayette, 13-12.
The Crusaders return to action when they host Harvard at Hart Soccer Field on Tuesday, October 18, at 3:00 p.m.
