WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman forward Lauren Wright (Biglerville, Pa.) scored two goals including the game-winner to break a 1-1 tie with 11:02 left in regulation as the Holy Cross women's soccer team defeated Lehigh, 2-1, in the Patriot League season-opener for both teams this afternoon at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 3-8 overall (1-0 Patriot League), while the Mountain Hawks fall to 5-4-2 overall (0-1 Patriot League). Wright leads the team in goals with five and points with 10.
Lehigh scored the first goal at 10:04 into the game when Melissa Montalvo fired a shot from 25 yards out just over the reach of Holy Cross senior goalie Jessica Pietrowicz (Worcester, Mass.). At the 38:52 mark, the Crusaders tied the game at 1-1 when Wright scored her first goal of the game. Sophomore Marielle Gonzalez (Ramsey, N.J.) sent a crossing pass from the right corner to Wright who then knocked the ball into the lower right corner of the net from five yards out.
With 11:02 left in the second half, Wright scored the game-winner when Gonzalez once again sent a crossing pass to Wright, who then buried the ball into the goal from five yards out. Gonzalez's two assists were her first two collegiate points.
Pietrowicz was outstanding in net as she made 11 saves to earn the win, while Lauren Mains stopped one shot in the second half for Lehigh. Julie Kafka made five saves in the first half for the Mountain Hawks.
The Crusaders return to action on Friday, October 12, when they host Bucknell in a Patriot League game at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
