Women's Soccer Ties Army, 1-1, In Patriot League Opener

WORCESTER, Mass.- Senior captain Lauren Pereira (Ludlow, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season and junior goalie Jessica Pietrowicz (Worcester, Mass.) made 15 saves as the Holy Cross women's soccer team tied Army, 1-1 in double-overtime, in each team's Patriot League opener tonight at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the tie, the Crusaders are now 2-7-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights are 4-6-1 and 0-0-1 in the Patriot League.
Pereira gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead at the 33:36 mark when she placed a shot into the right side of the goal hitting the inside post. Assists were credited to freshmen Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) and Sarah Gouveia (East Greenwich, R.I.).
The Black Knights tied the game at 1-1 in the second half at the 69:38 mark with a goal by Ashley Emerson. Emerson knocked in a loose ball right in front of the net from five yards out.
With 1:30 left in the first overtime period Emerson looked to end the game when she was sent on a breakaway, but Pietrowicz made a charging save to keep the game tied at 1-1. Each team had eight shots in overtime as the game ended in the tie.
Pietrowicz was outstanding in net as she made 15 saves, while Rebecca Garcia was solid in goal for Army as she stopped 10 shots.
The Crusaders return to action when they hit the road to take on Hartford in a non-conference game on Sunday, October 1, at 2:00 p.m.
