WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman forward Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross women's soccer team was defeated by Central Connecticut State 2-1 at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Crusaders fall to 1-2 on the season with the loss, while the Blue Devils improve to 1-2.
After a scoreless first half, Central Connecticut State's Beth Lloyd found the net from 25 yards out at the top of the penalty box, just 26 seconds into the second half. The Crusaders came back to tie up the score at 1-1 just over two minutes later, when Belanger headed in a cross from sophomore midfielder Sarah Gouveia (East Greenwich, R.I.) from 12 yards out in the center of the penalty box. But the tie would not last long, as the Blue Devils' Ciara Crinion converted a penalty kick at the 56:37 mark, after Lloyd had been fouled in the box. Holy Cross had several good scoring chances down the stretch, but could not convert as Central Connecticut State held on for the win.
Caity Casey made two saves in goal for the Blue Devils, while picking up her first victory of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Stone (Rockville, Md.) had three saves for the Crusaders, while freshman goalkeeper Mary Ferketic (West Hartford, Conn.) added one save.
The Crusaders return to action on Monday, September 10, when they play host to Northeastern at 6:00 p.m.
