Worcester, Mass. - Northeastern's Caitlin Whelan scored two goals as the Holy Cross women's soccer team fell to Northeastern, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at Hart Soccer Field, in the season opener for both teams.
Holy Cross got on the board early with a goal by junior Meredith Davis (Worcester, Mass.) with an assist to sophomore Meighan Kelly (Colts Neck, N.J.) at the 2:56 mark. Northeastern responded a minute later when Whelan put the ball in the lower left of the net off a pass from Kristen Blake. Whelan scored her second goal of the half with an unassisted tally at the 29:30 mark.
The Huskies extended their lead to 3-1 in the second half when Kristin Kowalik netted the eventual game-winning goal off a cross from Jessica Pfeifer. Holy Cross answered back and cut the deficit in half when senior Allison Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal at the 75:28 mark. But that was the last goal of the game as the Huskies held on for the win.
Sophomore goalie Cashel Scanlon (Bethesda, Md.) made seven saves in the first half for Holy Cross, while sophomore Jessica Pietrowicz (Worcester, Mass.) stopped five shots in the second half. Northeastern goalie Mariel Wilner made two saves.
The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Chestnut Hill to take on the Boston College Eagles on Sunday, August 28, at 1:00 p.m.
