WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross sophomore forward Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) scored a goal in the 73rd minute, but the Crusaders could not force overtime as they were defeated by Navy, 2-1, in Patriot League women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Midshipmen improve to 17-1-1 on the season and are 5-0-1 in the Patriot League, while Holy Cross slips to 6-10-1 overall and 2-4-0 in conference games.
Navy wasted no time in scoring the first marker as Ashlynn Soellner tallied her 10th goal of the year, just 1:06 into the contest to put the Mids up 1-0. Taylor Batye fed the ball into the box for Soellner to convert on the game's first shot.
After the intermission, Navy increased its lead to 2-0, from a goal by Paloma Perez at the 55th minute. Soellner and Morgan Dankanich assisted on Perez's fifth marker of the season.
Just over one minute later, Holy Cross junior midfielder Cassie Muzik (Massapeaqua, N.Y.) launched a shot from 25 yards out that almost found the back of the net, but Navy goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner's outstretched arm guided the ball over the net.
The Crusaders would get on the scoreboard in the 73rd minute as Righini received a pass from senior midfielder Maura Fox (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and fired a shot from six yards out for her team leading fifth goal of the season, to make the score 2-1. However, Holy Cross would not be able to put any more in the net as the Navy defense stood strong.
Crusaders sophomore keeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) made two saves in net, while Hoerner pushed aside four shots.
Holy Cross held a 12-8 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 clip in the second half. The two squads each had three corner kicks.
In a brief pre-game ceremony, Fox, and classmates Ashlyn Angell (Raleigh, N.C.), Hannah Earner (Pembroke, Mass.), Kellie Wiederhold (Wyckoff, N.J.), Danielle Wasserman (Boulder, Colo.), and Maggie McGoldrick (Cohasset, Mass.) were honored on "Senior Day" for playing their final regular season home game.
