Riverdale, N.Y. – Senior forward Hannah Earner (Pembroke, Mass.) tallied the only goal of the contest as the Holy Cross women's soccer team defeated Manhattan by a score of 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Gaelic Park. The Crusaders are now 4-5-1 on the season while Manhattan falls to 3-5-0.
The Crusaders outshot the Jaspers 7-1 in the first half, but neither team was able to net a goal. Earner finally broke the scoreless tie with 17:31 remaining, heading a ball off a pass from freshman Megan Greineder (East Greenwich, R.I.) past Manhattan goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny for her second goal of the season. Greineder now leads the team with three assists on the year. Holy Cross stepped up its defense, holding the Jaspers to five shots on goal, and came away with the 1-0 victory.
Holy Cross outshot Manhattan 14-9, putting nine shots on goal from six different players. Sophomore goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) stopped all five shots she faced to record her third shutout of the season. She is now 3-2-1 on the season while Skoniecyny, who replaced starting goalkeeper Kara Davis at halftime, holds a record of 2-3-0.
The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29. The team will open up Patriot League play against Army at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium at 7:00 p.m. That game can also be seen live on Crusader Vision.
