WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's soccer team played Bucknell evenly for the first half, but two unanswered goals by the Bison in the second half left Holy Cross on the losing end of a 2-0 decision. With the loss, Holy Cross moves to a record of 2-8-2 (0-2-0 Patriot League) on the season while the Bison go to 3-7-1 (1-1-0 PL).
Holy Cross got off to an ominous start shortly after kickoff when a breakdown in the defense left Bucknell's Liz Dwornik with an uncontested shot at the Crusader goal in the first minute of the match. Freshman goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) met the initial challenge head-on and made the first of her five saves on the evening.
The remainder of the first half was spent jostling for possession in the midfield, and both teams entered halftime scoreless with three shots apiece.
The pace of the game opened up considerably in the second half, as both teams began to create pressure offensively. In the 53rd minute, Bucknell's Taryn Boucher was able to control a failed clear by the Holy Cross defense and place a shot into an empty Crusader goal. Boucher's score gave Bucknell a 1-0 lead.
The Crusaders collected their focus in a team huddle following the Bucknell goal and within a minute created two excellent scoring opportunities. The first was a shot by freshman Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) that bounced off the far right post of the Bucknell goal followed by a strong right-footed effort from junior Maura Fox (Shrewsbury, Mass.) that forced a save out of the Bison goalkeeper.
With 35:30 left in regulation, Holy Cross celebrated an equalizing goal by sophomore Gaby Ransom (Concord, N.H.), only to find out seconds later that the goal was disallowed by the sideline official who ruled that Ransom was in an offsides position. The match remained 1-0 in Bucknell's favor.
Boucher added an insurance goal for Bucknell in the 72nd minute and the when the final whistle blew, the final score was Bucknell 2, Holy Cross 0.
Holy Cross continues Patriot League action this weekend when they host Colgate on Sunday, Oct. 9. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
