WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Holy Cross women's soccer team opened conference play with a 2-0 loss at Army earlier this afternoon. The Crusaders now stand at 2-7-2 on the season and 0-1-0 in the Patriot League. Army, the Patriot League pre-season poll favorite, moves to 8-2-2 on the season and 1-0-0 in league play.
The Crusaders generated several scoring opportunities early, forcing Army goalkeeper Monica Lee to make three saves in the first 22 minutes of the match. The last save of the Holy Cross flurry came off a head ball by freshman Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.).
Shortly after Righini's header, Army controlled the ball back into the Holy Cross half of the field and earned a direct kick from 24 yards outside of the Crusader goal. Army forward Kim An was able to add to her Patriot League leading goal total by striking the free kick into the net and give Army a 1-0 lead. Holy Cross continued to create opportunities and matched the Black Knights shot for shot 7-7 going into half time.
Army added a second goal in the 56th minute off another set piece when Errin Helbling headed in a corner kick sent by Donna Bennett.
Despite trailing 2-0 late into the match, the Crusaders continued to fight until the final whistle as sophomore Sarah Kelley (Bedford, N.H.) had her 86th minute shot tipped just past the far right post by the Army goalkeeper. Freshman Ally Pasquariello (Siffield, Conn.) made one last strike at cracking the scoreboard in the final minute when she launched a hard shot at the Black Knight goal, forcing another tough save by Lee.
Holy Cross will continue Patriot League action on Friday, Oct. 7 when the Crusaders host Bucknell. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
