LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Holy Cross women's soccer team earned a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Rider earlier this afternoon. With their second tie of the weekend, the Crusaders (2-6-2) were able to snap a Rider (7-2-2) five game winning streak.
Rider came out aggressive with eight first half shots and took a 1-0 lead over the Crusaders when Claire Thompson scored the first goal of the game in the 39th minute. Holy Cross was held without a shot through the first stanza.
The Crusaders turned the game's momentum back in their favor soon after the second half kickoff. Sophomore Sarah Kelley (Bedford, N.H.) was able to get two shots off in the first five minutes of the half and then freshman Gina Righini (Salem, N.H) scored the equalizer 6:08 into second half action. Righini's third goal of the year knotted the game 1-1 and was created by a through ball off the foot of sophomore Gaby Ransom (Concord, N.H.).
Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of regulation and throughout both overtime periods. Freshman goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) turned away eight shots on goal from the Broncs during the match to sustain the 1-1 draw.
Holy Cross has concluded their September schedule of non-conference games and will train throughout the week in preparation for Patriot League play. The Crusaders will open conference play a week from today when they travel to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army on Sunday, Oct. 2. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
