Women’s Soccer Battles To 1-1 Draw Against Vermont

WORCESTER, Mass. -  Neither heavy rain nor fog could slow down an action-packed evening of soccer as Holy Cross battled Vermont to a 1-1 double-overtime draw.  The Crusaders were able to get their rhythm back on the offensive side of the field and matched their opponent shot for shot, with both teams tallying 14 shots each on the evening. Holy Cross finishes the night with a 2-6-1 record and Vermont moves to 2-5-3 overall.

The Crusaders came close to initiating the scoring early in the 18th minute when junior Kellie Wiederhold (Wyckoff, N.J.) rang a shot off the far post of the Vermont goal and narrowly missed putting away her own rebound as her second effort missed just to the right of the net.

Both teams continued to create scoring chances through the first half as the rain continued to fall at Smith Soccer Stadium. The stalemate was broken with 14:17 left in the half when senior Liz Early (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) brought the ball in from the right side and centered a well-paced pass through the middle that found the foot of junior Maura Fox (Shrewsbury, Mass.) who hit a one-timer beyond the reach of the Catamount goalkeeper and into the far side of the net. The goal gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead and was Fox's first goal of the season.

Play continued at a fast pace as the fog settled in during the second half. Vermont was able to match Holy Cross with the equalizer when Alexandra Dezenzo of the Catamounts lofted a shot from the left side over the outstretched hands of freshman goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) to tie the game 1-1 with 28:07 left in regulation.

The excitement continued all the way down to the final horn of the second-overtime when Dezenzo got off one last shot, trying to beat McCabe to the high side again. This time McCabe outmatched her opponent's effort as she tipped the ball off the crossbar with her eighth save of the evening to sustain the 1-1 draw in the game's final second.

Next up for Holy Cross will be a trip to Lawrenceville, N.J., when the Crusaders take on Rider Sunday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
