Women’s Soccer Loses Close Game To Fairfield, 1-0

Tricia Giglio

Holy Cross battled hard on Sunday in the finale of the Fairfield Women's Soccer Invitational, but dropped a close 1-0 decision to the host team Fairfield (2-1-2). The Crusaders finish the tournament with a 1-1 record and are now 1-4-0 on the year.

Freshman goalkeeper Carly McCabe  (Barrington, R.I.) gave another standout performance in the net for the Crusaders.  McCabe made another 11 saves on Sunday, after denying 10 shots on Friday against Central Connecticut, allowing just one goal for the tournament. For her efforts, McCabe was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Teammates freshman Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) and sophomore Tricia Giglio (Acton, Mass.) were also named All-Tournament selections.

The lone goal of the match was scored in the 56th minute when a free kick by Fairfield's Nikki Stanton found the foot of Shannon Fay who directed the ball into the Holy Cross net.  On the day, Fairfield had the edge on the Crusaders in shots 16-10, and shots on goal 12-6.

Holy Cross returns to back to Worcester and will take on Bryant for a mid-week home game on Wednesday, Sept. 14. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
