Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Central Connecticut 2-0, Picks Up First Win

The Holy Cross women's soccer team picked up their first victory of the 2011 campaign with a 2-0 decision over Central Connecticut on Friday afternoon. The game was played at Fairfield University as part of the Fairfield Women's Soccer Classic.

The Crusaders opened up the scoring at 35:07 of the first half with a goal by freshman Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.), assisted by senior Micaela Collins (Skillman, N.J.). The goal by Righini was the first of her Holy Cross career.

Freshman goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) gave a brilliant performance in goal, saving 10 shots on the day. The most pivotal save for McCabe came in the second half when she turned away a Central Connecticut penalty shot by diving to her lower left side. That effort preserved a 1-0 lead for the Crusaders.

Eight minutes later, senior Liz Early (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) received a ball off a throw in and proceeded to dribble through two Blue Devil defenders and finish with a well-placed shot into the side netting. Early's goal put the Crusaders up 2-0 and sealed the match for Holy Cross.

With the victory, Holy Cross improves to 1-3-0 on the season. The Crusaders wrap-up their trip at the Fairfield Women's Soccer Classic on Sunday when they play the host team Fairfield. Kickoff begins at 2:30 p.m.
