WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Lauren Wright (Biglerville, Pa.) put together two shots-on-goal but could not score as Hartford took a 1-0 win over the Crusaders in the season opener at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the loss, Holy Cross moves to 0-1, while Hartford improves to 1-0-1. Holy Cross finished the game with more shots than Hartford, 12-8.
The teams played to a scoreless first half tie as the Hawks out-shot the Crusaders 4-2. Junior goalkeeper Ashlyn Angell (Raleigh, N.C.) made two saves. Hartford then capitalized on a corner kick almost 16 minutes into the second half, scoring on the second pass and going ahead, 1-0, at 59:50. The Crusaders began to put on the offensive pressure the rest of the way, combining for 10 shot attempts in the second half, but could not find the back of the net. Freshman Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) collected four shots total to lead the squad in that category.
With the shutout, Angell picks up her first losing decision on the season, going to 0-1-0 overall. She finished with three saves. Hartford goalkeeper, Erin Quinlan, earned her first shutout of the season, improving to 1-0-1. Quinlan made a total of five saves.
Holy Cross continues action on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at Providence. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
