Holy Cross Womens Soccer Defeats Quinnipiac 2-1
WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Holy Cross women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the victory, Holy Cross snaps a three-game losing streak to improve to 2-3-0, while Quinnipiac remains winless at 0-3-0.
Stand scored the first goal of the game at the 23:28 mark in the first half when she recovered a loose ball just beyond the 18-yard mark. Stand put Holy Cross up, 2-0, 31 minutes into the game when she converted the cross from freshman Gaby Ransom (Concord, N.H.) from well beyond the box for her fourth goal of the season. Quinnipiac didn't give up, scoring less than five minutes later to cut Holy Cross' lead in half. Lauren Peacock recovered Kyla Miles' shot on goal to score for the Bobcats. Holy Cross held onto its lead the entire second half, shutting out the Bobcats to preserve the 2-1 victory.
Senior Mary Ferketic (West Hartford, Conn.) picked up her first win of the season, allowing just one goal and recording three saves. Quinnipiac keeper, Jillian Kelley, allowed two goals and recorded five saves. Holy Cross out-shot Quinnipiac 15-8.
The Crusaders will travel to Smithfield, R.I. on Wednesday, Sept. 15 for a 7:00 p.m. game against Bryant.
