WORCESTER, Mass. – A goal in the first half and one in the second gave the Holy Cross women's soccer team the offense it needed, as the Crusaders shut out Rhode Island, 2-0, at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium Friday night. With the victory, Holy Cross moves to 1-0, while Rhode Island falls to 0-1-1.
Senior Lauren Wright (Biglerville, Pa.) marked her return to the pitch with a goal at the 28:45 minute mark. Wright headed a cross by senior Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) into the lower left corner of the goal to give Holy Cross a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Maura Fox (Shrewsbury, Mass.) put the Crusaders up, 2-0, at the 52:48 mark in the second half on a shot from outside the box. Holy Cross held onto the lead to preserve the shutout and claim the victory.
Sophomore Ashlyn Angell (Raleigh, N.C.) made her first career start in net for the Crusaders, earning her first career shutout. URI goalkeeper Sasha Reiber suffered her first loss of the season, falling to 0-1-1. Reiber allowed two goals and made four saves.
Holy Cross continues action on Tuesday, Aug. 31 at Central Connecticut State. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
