WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross head women's soccer coach Darren Gallagher has named seniors Jenna Campagna (Berlin, Conn.), Mary Ferketic (West Hartford, Conn.), Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) and Lauren Wright (Biglerville, Pa.) captains for the 2010 season.
Stand and Wright return as captains for the second time in their careers. Last season, Stand led the Crusaders with 10 goals, tying her for fourth on the Holy Cross single-season record list. She was named to the 2009 first team All-Patriot League for the second time in her career, selected as a member of the NEWISA All-New England second team and named to the 2009 NSCAA NCAA Division I women's All-Mid-Atlantic Region third team. Wright returns to the pitch after missing the 2009 season due to an injury. She has started in 37 career games for the Crusaders and enters the season with 21 career points.
Campagna, a defender, and Ferketic, a goalkeeper, will also serve as captains in the fall. Campagna played in 11 games for the Crusaders a year ago and Ferketic started in net 14 times. Last season, Ferketic recorded a career-high 55 saves for a .743 save percentage and earned her first career shutout in 0-0 tie against Providence.
Holy Cross returns 14 letter winners, seven whom were starters, from last year's squad and welcomes eight newcomers to the team. Last year's team finished with a 7-9-3 overall record, the most wins in program history since the 2000 season.
