Women’s Soccer Announces 2010 Freshman Class

WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross head women's soccer coach Darren Gallagher has announced the 2010 freshman class for the Crusaders. Jackie Bellando (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Tricia Giglio (Acton, Mass.), Marlana Gomes (Middletown, Conn.), Alyssa Heiser (Bristol, Conn.), Sarah Kelley (Bedford, N.H.), Lizzy Leahy (Hingham, Mass.), Cassie Muzik ( Massapequa, N.Y.) and Gaby Ransom (Concord, N.H.) will join the Holy Cross program for the 2010-2011 academic year.

"I am extremely excited to welcome our 2010 class to the Holy Cross women's soccer program," says Gallagher. "We have assembled a group of players that bring impressive technical and tactical ability while also demonstrating strong character and leadership. These young ladies are exactly the type of student athlete that will thrive at Holy Cross." 

Bellando, a midfielder/forward from Rockville Centre, was a three-year starter for the varsity soccer team at South Side High School for head coach Judi Croutier. Bellando helped lead her team to a New York state title in 2007 and 2009 and was named a Scholar Athlete. As a member of the Rockville Centre Power club team, Bellando's team was the 2009 New York State Cup semi-finalists and the 2009 NEWSS champions.

Giglio, a defender from Acton, Mass., was a four-year member of the varsity soccer team at Acton Boxborough Regional High School for head coach Lee Billiard. A team captain her senior year, Giglio led her team to a Dual County League championship all four years and a Division I state championship in 2008. Giglio has been a member of the Stars of Massachusetts club team for the past six years, as her team won the Massachusetts State Championship from 2006-2009.

Gomes, a defender from Middletown, Conn., was a four-year starter for the Mercy High School varsity soccer team for head coach Jeff Vagell. Gomes was named team captain and team MVP in 2009 and led her team to a Southern Connecticut Conference Quinnipiac Division championship all four years. Gomes was a member of the Connecticut ODP team for six years and currently plays for the SoccerPlus club team.

Heiser, a forward from Bristol, Conn., was a four-year member of the varsity soccer team at Miss Porter's School for head coach Jamie Perry. Named her team's MVP in 2007, 2008 and 2009, Heiser led her team to its first ever post-season appearance in 2008. As a member of the Connecticut Football Club United, Heiser's team won the Connecticut State Cup Championship in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Heiser was also a member of the Connecticut ODP and the Region I ODP.

Kelley, a midfielder from Bedford, N.H., was a four-year member of the Bedford varsity soccer team for head coach Michelle Winning. As a team captain in 2008 and 2009, Kelley led her team to the Final Four both seasons and was named to first team All-State. As a member of the Seacoast United club team, Kelley was a member of the N.H. ODP from 2005-2009.

Leahy, a midfielder from Hingham, Mass., was a four-year member of the varsity soccer team at Hingham High School for head coach Ryan Puntiri. Leahy, a team captain in 2009, helped lead Hingham to the state tournament in 2007 and 2008 and was named team MVP in 2008 and 2009. As a member of the Crusaders United Soccer Club, Leahy led her team to the 2009 state finals.

Muzik, a midfielder from Massapequa, N.Y., was a three-year member of the St. Anthony's varsity soccer team under head coach Dave Prutting. A team captain her senior year, Muzik helped lead her team to a New York State CHSAA championship in 2007. As a member of the Eastern New York ODP, Muzik was selected to the regional ODP and will participate in the Kuban Spring 2010 International Tournament in Sochi, Russia.

Ransom, a midfielder from Concord, N.H., was a four-year member of the varsity soccer team at St. Paul's for head coaches Joe Donnelly and Jorge Pardo. Named team captain her senior year, Ransom was the leading goal scorer for St. Paul's in 2008 and 2009 and named to the Independent School All-League team in 2007, 2008 and 2009. As a member of the Seacoast United club team, Ransom was selected to the Super Y National ODP camp in 2009.
