WORCESTER, Mass. - A penalty kick goal by senior Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) cut the Brown Bears' lead in half and a game tying goal by sophomore Liz Early (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) sent the game into overtime, but the Holy Cross women's soccer team couldn't come up with the win, ending the game tied in double overtime on Tuesday evening at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium in Worcester, Mass. With the tie, the Crusaders are now 7-6-3 overall while the Brown Bears are 4-7-1.
Brown scored the first goal of the game at the 54:35 mark in the second half when Sar Herbert-Seropian headed a pass from Carly Ruiz into the goal. The Brown Bears took a 2-0 lead at the 68:54 mark when Joyce Chun converted a corner kick by Gina Walker. Holy Cross cut the Brown lead in half at the 80:00 mark when Stand snuck a penalty kick by Brown goalkeeper Steffi Yellin. Early tied the game five minutes later when she recovered the loose ball and beat Yellin to the goal. Neither team was able to score again, ending regulation tied, 2-2.
Both teams turned up the intensity in overtime action, but were unable to break the stale mate, ending the game knotted 2-2.
Junior goalkeeper Mary Ferketic (West Hartford, Conn.) made the start in net allowing no goals and recording five saves. Senior Jessica Stone (Rockville, Md.) entered the game in the second half, allowing two goals and recording no saves. For Brown, Brenna Hogue made the start in net, allowing no goals and recording no saves. Yellin entered the game in the second half and allowed two goals and made one save.
The Crusaders continue action in Worcester on Thursday, Oct. 22, hosting Patriot League opponent Colgate at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
