EASTON, Pa. - Senior Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) scored the only goal of the day to lead the Holy Cross women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon in the Patriot League opener. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 6-4-1 and pick up their first Patriot League win of the season, while the Leopards fall to 3-7-1 and suffer their first Patriot League loss. Holy Cross' six wins are the most since the 2001 season when the Crusaders recorded an overall record of 6-9-2.
Stand scored the game-winning goal at the 14:01 mark on a free kick. The goal was Stand's sixth goal of the season. Stand's goal proved to be all the Crusaders needed, as the defense held the Leopards to just five shots.
Junior keeper Mary Ferketic (West Hartford, Conn.) recorded her third shutout of the season, allowing no goals and making three saves. Lafayette keeper Lauren Smedley allowed one goal and made three saves. Holy Cross outshot Lafayette 6-5.
The Crusaders continue Patriot League action on the road next week with a 4:00 p.m. match up against American on Oct. 9 and a 1:00 p.m. match up with Navy on Oct. 11.
