Women's Soccer Falls To Siena, 3-1
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y - A game winning goal by Siena's Caitlin Cahalan broke a 1-1 tie and led the Saints to a 3-1 victory over the Holy Cross women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon in Loudonville, N.Y. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-2-1 on the season, while the Saints improve to 3-1 overall.
The first half of action was scoreless as Holy Cross junior goalkeeper Mary Ferketic (West Hartford, Conn.) made five saves to keep the Saints off the board. Quickly into the second half, action started to heat up with Siena scoring the first goal of the game at the 48:24 mark. The Crusaders responded at the 49:32 mark when senior Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal from 22 yards out to tie the game, 1-1. The game remained tied until the 80th minute when Cahalan scored to give the Siena the 2-1 lead. Ashleigh Barone scored on a penalty kick at the 84:06 mark to end the game in favor of the Saints, 3-1.
Ferketic made six saves on 21 Siena shots, allowing three goals and suffering her first loss of the season. Siena goalkeeper Liz Barna made six saves on 13 Holy Cross shots.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 15 when they welcome Wagner to Worcester, Mass. for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
