Lowell, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's and women's rowing teams began the 2005 spring season on the Merrimack River with Boston College, Coast Guard, Wesleyan, Connecticut and Mount Holyoke.
Twelve boats raced at the regatta, with several winning their respected groups.
In the men's varsity eight boat, the Crusaders beat Coast Guard and Wesleyan with a time of 6:14.0, as the men's second varsity eight defeated the same teams with a time of 6:18.8.
In the women's third varsity eight, the Crusaders sailed past Mount Holyoke and Coast Guard with a time of 7:28.4 for the top spot.
Placing first and second in the men's third varsity eight was Holy Cross team `A' with a time of 6:30.0 and `B' with a time of 6:48.6, respectively. Both teams finished ahead of Wesleyan.
The women's novice eight placed first over Coast Guard with a time of 7:34.0, while the men's novice eight finished behind Coast Guard with a time of 6:34.1.
Both lightweight boats, the men's varsity eight and men's second varsity eight, were beaten by Boston College. The varsity eight finished with a time of 6:21.3, while the second varsity eight was clocked at 6:37.4.
In the women's varsity eight, Holy Cross placed second to Coast Guard and ahead of Wesleyan with a time of 7:06.5. The women's second varsity eight placed third with a time of 7:34.0.
The men's varsity four finished with a time of 7:16.9, just .9 seconds behind first-place Wesleyan. In the women's varsity four boat, the Crusaders were beaten out by Wesleyan's `A' boat by 1.1 seconds, finishing with a time of 7:50.1, to place ahead of Wesleyan's `B' boat.
The men next compete on Saturday, April 2, against New Hampshire and Vermont, while the women go up against Simmons and Vermont. Both teams compete on the Quinsigamond River, in Worcester, Mass.
