PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - The Holy Cross women's rowing team placed fourth in two of its three races and fifth in one race at the 32nd annual Murphy Cup hosted by Temple University on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J.
The varsity eight placed fifth of five with a time of 8:26.35, while Navy won the heat with a time of 8:01.03. The Crusaders' second varsity eight finished in fourth of five with a time of 8:14.81, while Navy took the heat with a time of 7:47.99. The novice eight also finished in fourth of five with a time of 9:06.16, while Navy won again with a time of 8:09.92.
"We're clearly not where we want to be," said head Patrick Diggins. "We're still struggling with half of this fall's varsity eight out working through injuries. However, our senior and junior leaders are focused and working hard. Our younger athletes are stepping up to make the contributions we need to be successful. Obviously, it doesn't help that we haven't been on the water since spring training. We used this weekend to actually get some time on the water and we're hoping that some rainy and warmer weather will melt the ice on Lake Quinsigamond so that we can actually practice before our next competition. We're keeping it in perspective. The team stands by our motto: "No excuses - No Regrets." We need to get faster and we will."
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 5 at 11:30 a.m. as they host Colgate and UMass on Lake Quinsigamond.
Holy Cross Second Varsity Eight: Caroline Laurendeau (coxswain), Lauren Yacobucci, Catherine Greene, Siobhan Murphy, Grace Tricomi, Maddy Supple, Kiley McLean, Tess Starshak, Eugenia Minondo.
Holy Cross Novice Eight: Lindsay Gibbons (coxswain), Alexandra McKenna, Bridgid Carey, Paige McGeehan, Chelsea Schwartzman, Juliana Toes, Trini Packhem, Amanda Gibson, Abbie Joy.
