Broderick, Charron & Sollazzo Earn PL All-Academic Honors
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross women's rowing seniors Kate Broderick (West Newbury, Mass.), Beth Charron (Manchester, N.H.) and Jill Sollazzo (Bethlehem, Pa.) have been named to the 2012 Patriot League Rowing All-Academic team. The Crusaders are three of 11 athletes named to the team which tied MIT for the most from one school.
Broderick, who was on the inaugural All-Academic team in 2011 and is a three-year member of the varsity eight, is a Biology major and has a 3.75 total grade point average. She has been a member of the varsity eight in all seven spring regattas this season. The varsity eight has two first-place finishes as it won a race versus Simmons and Smith, and a race versus UConn. Broderick earned 2011 first team All-Patriot League honors and received 2011 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete honors. She earned 2010 ECAC/NIRC Stewards' All-Academic team accolades and is a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Charron, who is a two-year team captain and a four-year member of the varsity eight, is a Biology major and has a 3.58 total grade point average. This is also the second time she has earned this honor as she was on the inaugural All-Academic team in 2011. She has also been a member of the varsity eight in all seven spring regattas this season. Charron earned 2011 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete honors and 2010 ECAC/NIRC Stewards' All-Academic team accolades. She is also a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Charron is a member of Holy Cross' student organization Medical Ministries International as she traveled with the group to Honduras to provide care for those in need.
Sollazzo, who has been the coxswain of the varsity four in five spring regattas this season, is a Psychology major and has a 3.78 total grade point average. She was also a member of the boat that placed third out of 16 teams at the club eight race at the 41st Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in the fall season. Sollazzo was a member of the varsity four that placed third at the 2011 Patriot League Championship. She earned 2010 ECAC/NIRC Stewards' All-Academic team accolades and is a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
The All-Academic team began in the 2010-2011 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. To be eligible the athlete has to have at least a 3.20 total grade point average. The athlete must be a starter or a key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. The team is voted on by women's rowing sports information directors around the conference who could not vote for their own student-athletes.
The Crusaders, who placed fourth at the Patriot League Championship, will compete at the 2012 New England Championship on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester on Saturday, May 5, at 8:00 a.m.
