WORCESTER, Mass. – The Crusaders' varsity eight placed fourth out of 36 boats as the Holy Cross women's rowing team opened its fall season at the Snake Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday.

Bates "A" won the race with a time of 14:22.550. The Crusaders finished fourth with a time of 14:49.796. Holy Cross also had strong performances from the second varsity eight and the third varsity eight. The second varsity eight placed sixth (15:05.140) and the third varsity eight finished 18th (16:08.984).

"We had a very strong beginning today," said head coach Patrick Diggins. "The varsity finished fourth of 36 behind Bates, Wellesley and WPI. Bates and Wellesley finished second and third respectively at the 2011 NCAA Championship and WPI have a large and strong team this year. Our second varsity finished first ahead of all the "B" entries and a number of strong varsity "A" boats including New Hampshire and Smith. Our third varsity finished second of all the "C" entries behind only Tufts. We have three varsity athletes that are slowly returning from surgery this fall, so we're taking it very slow. We're working on technique and building our strength so that we have our squad back to full strength this spring. We hope to continue on the right track with strong showings at the Head of the Charles and Head of the Schuylkill."

The Crusaders return to action when they compete at the 47th Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct. 22-23. Go here for the schedule.
