WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross head women's rowing coach Patrick Diggins has announced seniors Abby Hammond (Holliston, Mass.) and Mara Piltin (Medford, N.J.) as the 2009-2010 team co-captains.
A three-year member of the rowing team, Hammond helped the Crusaders earn a spot in the 2008 and 2009 grand finals at the New England Championships. During this year's Patriot League Championship, she was a member of the varsity eight boat which finished in third place. In June of 2008, Hammond traveled to England to compete in the Henley Regatta. During her freshman and sophomore years, she was a member of the novice eight team. A 2006 graduate of Montrose School, Hammond was a member of Community Rowing, Inc. in Boston throughout her high school career. Hammond is a psychology major with interest in speech pathology.
A leading member of the second varsity eight, Piltin contributed to this year's second-place finish at the New England Rowing Championship and third-place finish at the Patriot League Championship. Piltin has also had great success at the varsity level, racing in the varsity eight at the 2008 Henley Regatta. During her freshman year, Piltin competed in the second varsity eight, which went on to finish second at the Knecht Cup Regatta. Prior to Holy Cross, the 2006 graduate from Merion Mercy Academy rowed competitively for six years and was a founding member of the school's rowing team. Named to the 2007 and 2008 Patriot League All Academic Honor Roll, Piltin is majoring in biology with a pre-med concentration and also has a minor in studio art.
