Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's lacrosse team was picked to finish fifth in this year's Patriot League preseason poll as voted on by coaches and sports information directors from around the league.
The Crusaders, who finished 8-9 overall and 2-4 in the Patriot League last season, received 38 votes, placing just behind Lafayette (41) and Bucknell (44).
With 69 total votes, Colgate was chosen to repeat as League champion in 2005, edging out American (64) in the poll.
The Crusaders lost just one starter from last year's squad in Katie Britt, and welcomes back its leading scorer from a season ago, sophomore midfielder Patricia Sutton (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), who led the team in scoring with 48 goals and 23 assists.
Third-year head coach Stephanie Pavlick also brings back one of her top midfielders in junior Carolyn Smirti (Long Island, N.Y.), who started all 17 games for the Crusaders and tallied 23 goals and six assists. Sophomore Megan Orr (Wilton, Conn.), also returns as the team's starting goalie. She recorded 191 saves on her way to eight wins last year.
Holy Cross opens up the season on February 26 when it travels to UMass-Amherst for a 1:00 p.m. match-up with the Minutewomen. The Crusaders' first home game is Tuesday, March 1 against the University of New Hampshire. Game time is 3:30.
