WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Megan Fenton scored three goals but it was not enough as Whitney Michele scored four goals to lead the Connecticut (No. 19) women's lacrosse team past Holy Cross 13-10 Wednesday at the Hart Astroturf. The Huskies improve to 9-5 overall while the Crusaders drop to 10-5 on the season.
Senior Patricia Sutton (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored two goals while Cara O'Sullivan (Duxbury, Mass.), Nikki Bolduc (Exeter, N.H.), Amy Archambault (West Hartford, Conn.), Kristine Corkum (Ipswich, Mass.) and Ali Baird (Wilbraham, Mass.) each had a goal. Archambault recorded the only two assists of the game for the Crusaders.
Connecticut came out strong scoring the first five goals of the game in a 15 minutes span. Fenton put away the first goal for the Crusaders with 14:34 left in the half off an assist from Archambault. Baird and O'Sullivan scored for Holy Cross before the end of the half as the Huskies took a 6-3 advantage going into the break.
Sutton scored the first goal of the second half unassisted for the Crusaders. Connecticut returned three more goals in the next three minutes to keep a 9-4 lead. The Crusaders outscored the Huskies, 6-4, in the last 22 minutes of the game with goals from Archambault, Bolduc, Corkum, Sutton and two more from Fenton. Holy Cross matched Connecticut's seven goals in the second half, but could not overcome the 6-3 deficit from the first half as the Huskies won the game 13-10.
The Crusaders will travel to place Colgate Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in their last regular season game. Holy Cross will host the Patriot League Tournament April 27 and 29. The Crusaders will face the fourth seed at 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 27 as the second seed will face the third seed at 4:00 p.m.
