Crusaders Down Fairfield 13-8

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Patricia Sutton and sophomore Kristine Corkum combined to score nine goals to lead the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team to a 13-8 win over Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. Holy Cross has now won two straight and improves to10-4 overall, while Fairfield falls to 4-9.

Sutton recorded her eighth hat trick of the season - and the second in a row - in the first 9:15 of the game, as Holy Cross jumped out to a 3-0 lead in with 20:45 on the clock. The Stags responded with two straight goals to cut the lead to just one (3-2), but Holy Cross ended the half with two goals of its own to take a 5-2 lead into the break.

The two teams traded goals to start the second half. Corkum recorded her second goal of the game just 62 seconds in to go ahead, 6-2, before Abbey Goodwin answered with a score of her own to get the Stags within three (6-3). Amy Archambault then got in the scoring column with an unassisted effort at the 25:38 mark, but just 10 seconds later, Beth Loffredo won the draw control, sprinted ahead of the pack and made good on the breakaway attempt to make the score, 7-4.

Holy Cross then scored back-to-back goals to take a 9-4 lead with 23:04 to go. Fairfield came right back with consecutive goals to again cut the lead to three (9-6), but the Crusaders went on a decisive four-goal run to take a 13-6 lead. The Stags added two late goals with less than 19 seconds to go, but it was too little, too late.

Sutton finished the afternoon with a game-high five goals, while Corkum added four. Amy Archambault, Nikki Bolduc, Cara O'Sullivan and Cashel Scanlon were also in the scoring column for Holy Cross.

Orr was stellar in net and made 14 saves for the Crusaders to record her 10th win of the season. Chatnik made 15 stops for Fairfield.

Holy Cross hosts Oregon tomorrow night, Thursday, April 13, at 7:00 p.m. at the Hart Turf.
