FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Kristine Corkum (Ipswich, Mass.) scored four goals to lead the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team past Fairfield Wednesday in non-conference action. The Crusaders improve to 9-4 overall while the Stags fall to 5-8 on the season.
Ali Baird (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Patricia Sutton (Saratoga Spring, N.Y.) scored three goals each while Megan Fenton (Bridgewater, N.J.), Kaitlin Nangle (Skaneateles, N.Y.), Calley Benoit (Concord, N.H.), and Cashel Scanlon (Bethesda, Md.) each added a goal and Sheila Rom (Raleigh, N.C.) Kelly Winslow (Wrentham, Mass.) and Scanlon recorded assists.
In the first half, Holy Cross scored the first three goals as Sutton put one in on a free position shot and Corkum scored two unassisted. Fairfield scored the next two goals to make it a 3-2 just over eight minutes into the game. Corkum broke a 14 minute dry spell when she scored with just over eight minutes left in the first half. Sutton followed up scoring her third goal of the game and Corkum put away her fourth to lead the Crusaders into halftime with a 7-2 advantage.
Baird scored the next three goals unassisted for Holy Cross in the second half as Fairfield scored two to make it 10-4 with less than 12 minutes left in the game. Holy Cross scored four more goals as Scanlon scored off an assist from Rom, Fenton netted one unassisted, Nangle scored from Winslow and Benoit from Scanlon to make it 14-4. The Stags came alive scoring five goals with less than two minutes left in the game, but it was not enough as the Crusaders held on to win 14-9.
Megan Orr recorded the win in goal for Holy Cross with 18 saves on 38 shots and picked up eight groundballs. Hallowell, Samantha (Duxbury Mass.) had three caused turnovers while Darcy Wolcott (Concord, N.H.) and Sutton had two.
The Crusaders return home to play Lehigh on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and Connecticut on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
