Holy Cross Takes Down Vermont, 11-6
April 7, 2005
Worcester, Mass. - Sophomore Patricia Sutton (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored five goals and added an assist to lead Holy Cross to an 11-6 win over the University of Vermont on Thursday afternoon at the Hart Astroturf Field. The Crusaders, who have won seven of their last nine games, improve to 7-5 overall on the season. Vermont falls to 3-6.
The Catamounts started the game with an early 3-1 lead after a goal by Ashleigh Wilson and two Vanessa Cox tallies just 10 minutes in. But the Crusaders fought back and scored four consecutive goals in a seven minute span to take a 5-3 lead at the 19:40 mark. Reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, Amy Archambault (West Hartford, Conn.) scored two goals during the rally.
Vermont kept it close, however, when Wilson tacked on her second of two goals on the afternoon to make it a 5-4 contest, but freshman Kaitlin Nangle (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and Sutton put two more scores on the board for HC, giving the Purple and White a 7-5 lead at the break.
The Crusaders owned the second half, outscoring the visitors by three to come out on top, 11-6. Sutton netted her fourth and fifth goals of the game, and freshman Kristine Corkum added her second unassisted tally of the day. Freshman Cashel Scanlon closed out the Crusader scoring with less than two minutes remaining after a leading pass from senior Dee Dee Banel.
Sophomore goalie Megan Orr made 10 saves to record her seventh win of the season, while Vermont's Meaghan Hanley came up with eight stops in the losing effort.
The Crusaders host American University on Saturday afternoon in a crucial Patriot League contest. Holy Cross is currently in third place in the conference with a 3-1 record. The Eagles are in second place at 3-0. At season's end, the top four teams make the playoffs. Game time on Saturday is at 12:00 p.m.
