Siena Downs Holy Cross in Double Overtime

Schenectady, N.Y. - The Holy Cross women's lacrosse team lost an 11-10 double-overtime heartbreaker to Siena College Wednesday night at Union College's Frank Bailey Field. With just 18 seconds remaining in the second half, Siena's Michelle Eide scored the game tying goal to send the Saints into overtime with the Crusaders. Then in the second overtime, Kathryn Marcantonio tallied the game winning goal for the Saints, giving Holy Cross just its second loss in the last seven games.
The Crusaders are now 5-5 on the season, while Siena improves to 3-4.
Holy Cross went into the break with a 5-3 advantage after dominating the Saints early in the half, taking a 5-1 lead with 4:28 remaining. Carolyn Smirti led the HC charge with two goals while Patricia Sutton, Kailtlin Nangle and Amy Archambault all recorded single scores.
But in the second, the Saints fought back and evened the score at 7-7 just eight minutes in after an Amy Schoomaker tally. Holy Cross then tacked on three straight goals by Nangle, Archambault and Smirti, giving HC a 10-7 lead. But with just 1:31 remaining, Siena scored three unanswered goals, tying the game at 10 and sending it into overtime.
The two teams went scoreless in the first overtime until Marcantonio's game-winner with 11 seconds remaining in the second OT.
Sophomore goalie Megan Orr stopped eight shots for the Crusaders, while Bethany Zimmer had nine saves in the net for the Saints.
The Crusaders travel to Lafayette this weekend for a 1:00 p.m. conference match-up with the Leopards. Holy Cross is currently 2-1 in league play this season.
