Worcester, Mass. - Freshman Amy Archambault (West Hartford, Conn.) pumped in three goals and sophomore Patricia Sutton added two goals and an assist to lead Holy Cross to a 9-6 conference win over Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Astroturf. Holy Cross has now won five of its last six games to improves to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League. Lehigh falls to 3-4 (0-2).
The Crusaders got on the board early when freshman Nikki Bolduc (Exeter, N.H.) took a Kristine Corkum (Ipswich, Mass.) pass and blasted a shot past Lehigh goalie Brittany Besler just 16 seconds into the contest. Holy Cross then rattled off three straight goals, including two Archambault scores to take a commanding 4-0 lead 13 minutes into the game.
The Mountain Hawks responded with goals by Barrie Cominsky and Amy Chamberlain less than five minutes apart to get within two (4-2), but Holy Cross closed out the first period with two more goals by Carolyn Smirti (Huntington, N.Y.) and Sutton to take a 6-2 halftime advantage.
Lehigh's Libby Gill scored her first of two second-half goals 4:24 into the second half to cut HC's lead to just three (6-3), but Archambault and Sutton answered right back with two more Crusader scores to essentially put the game out of reach at 8-3. Sutton assisted on Archambault's third tally of the game at the 39:47 mark, which also proved to be the game-winner.
The Mountain Hawks scored three of the game's next four goals, but it was too little too late as the Crusaders won their second league game with the 9-6 final. Freshman Kaitlin Nangle (Skaneateles, N.Y.) scored the final goal for Holy Cross with 12 minutes remaining.
Sophomore goalie Megan Orr (Wilton, Conn.) made 12 stops to lead the Crusaders, while Lehigh goalies Kyle Begina (four saves) and Besler (three saves) split time in the losing effort.
The Crusaders travel to Loudonville, N.Y. on Wednesday, March 30 for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference match-up with Siena.
