HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to Colgate, 11-8, on Saturday afternoon in the Patriot League opener for both teams. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-5 overall (0-1 Patriot League), while the Raiders improve to 2-4 overall (0-1 Patriot League).
Senior Kristine Corkum (Ipswich, Mass.), freshman Mary Milley (Fairfax, Va.) and freshman Meg O'Leary (Longmeadow, Mass.) each scored two goals for the Crusaders. Freshman Annie Boylan (Andover, Mass.) had one goal and one assist, while sophomore Katie Gardner (Garden City, N.Y.) scored one goal.
Colgate was led by Brie Moran's four goals and Ashley Didio's two goals and one assist.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 4-0 lead to open the first half. The goals were scored by Milley, Gardner on a free position shot, Boylan and then Corkum on a free position shot. After Colgate made it a 4-1 game, O'Leary scored a goal off an assist by Boylan to make it a 5-1 contest. The Raiders then scored seven straight goals to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
After Colgate scored its eighth consecutive goal to start the second half, O'Leary netted her second goal of the game to cut the Colgate lead to 9-6. The Raiders then scored two goals to increase their lead to 11-6. The Crusaders scored the last two goals of the game with goals by Milley and Corkum for the 11-8 final score. Corkum's goal came on a free position shot.
Holy Cross freshman goalie Amy Martin (Bloomfield, Mich.) made 18 saves, while Sara Drexler stopped five shots for Colgate.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, March 15, when they travel to Annapolis, Md., to meet Patriot League opponent Navy at noon.
