Providence, R.I. - The Holy Cross women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season with a 6-5 decision over Brown University Saturday morning at the Erickson Athletic Complex. Holy Cross improves to 1-3 on the season while Brown starts its season 0-1.
Holy Cross opened the scoring 9:36 into the half when Carolyn Smirti beat Brown goalie Julia Southard for a 1-0 Crusader lead. Less than two minutes later, the HC increased its lead to 2-0 with a free position goal at the 11:01 mark.
Sophomore Jen Redd brought Brown to within one goal at 14:59 with her first of two goals, but the Crusaders answered 10 minutes later, at 24:34 to take a 3-1 lead heading into the break.
Holy Cross opened the scoring in the second half just 1:24 in, but Redd notched her second of the game on a free position shot to get the Bears within two (4-2).
Smirti tallied her second goal of the game at the 10:00 mark, but Kate Staley scored two straight goals to cut the lead to one (5-4). Smirti then responded with the eventual game-winner at 27:52, giving the Crusaders a 6-4 lead.
HC goalie Megan Orr made 17 saves for the win, while Southard recorded five saves in a losing effort.
Holy Cross travels to Florida for a 9:30 a.m. match-up with Wagner College on Monday, March 7.
