Worcester, MA - Holy Cross came up just short in its 2005 home opener as UNH took an 8-5 decision at the Hart Astro Turf on Monday afternoon. The Crusaders fall to 0-2 (0-0) on the season, while UNH starts the year off 1-0.
The Crusaders got on the board early as Patricia Sutton converted on her seventh goal of the season to give the home team a 1-0 lead just five minutes in. UNH came right back, however, and tied the game at 1-1 when Katie Leland broke through the defense to beat Megan Orr for the Wildcats' first tally.
Sutton then responded with her second goal of the game just over five minutes later to make it a 2-1 HC lead after she made a nice move into the circle and blasted a shot by UNH keeper Stacey Plati. The Wildcats then scored four consecutive goals to take a 5-2 lead at the half.
In the second, the Crusaders fought their way back to cut the lead to one (5-4) with 25 minutes remaining after goals by freshman Kelly Winslow and sophomore Jacque Hastings just four minutes apart. But the Wildcats would not let HC get any closer, and tacked on three more scores to extend their lead to four (8-4). Freshman Kristine Corkum tried to rally the Crusaders with a late tally, to bring the Purple and White within three (8-5), but the UNH defense hung on to seal the win.
Orr made 13 saves for Holy Cross, while Plati came up with 12 stops in the win.
The Crusaders are back in action on Thursday when they take on Sacred Heart in a 3:00 p.m. match-up at the Hart Astro Turf.
