Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's lacrosse team began the 2006 season in fine fashion after defeating Massachusetts (0-1), 11-8, on Saturday morning at the Hart Astroturf in the season-opener for both teams. Junior Patricia Sutton led the Crusaders with three goals and Carolyn Smirti, Amy Archambault and Nikki Bolduc all added two apiece. Melissa Conley and Kristine Corkum were also in the scoring column for Holy Cross (1-0).
Holy Cross jumped out to a 5-1 lead at the half and cruised the rest of the way. The Minutemen got on the board just 3:31 into the game when Kaytlin McCormick beat Crusader goalie Megan Orr for the 1-0 score. But the Crusaders responded with five unanswered goals to close out the half. Smirti scored both of her goals in the first stanza.
In the second, the Crusaders continued to dominate, scoring two goals to begin the half. Sutton made good on a free position shot at the 39:46 mark and Archambault scored her first goal of the season less than four minutes later thanks to a set-up pass by Sutton.
Umass battled back and outscored Holy Cross, 7-4 the rest of the way. The Minutemen had cut the lead to just two (9-7) after a Kathleen Typadis goal with just over four minutes remaining, but could not get any closer. Two more Holy Cross scores by Bolduc and Sutton put the Crusaders up 11-7 with just 2:06 to play and effectively sealed the victory for Holy Cross.
Orr made eight saves in net to record her first win of the season. Umass goal keeper Lauren McCarthy had 10 saves for the visitors.
The Crusaders are on the road for two games next week as they travel to New Hampshire on Tuesday and Harvard on Thursday. Both games are set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
