WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Kristine Corkum (Ipswich, Mass.) scored four goals to lead the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team past Massachusetts 7-6 in the Crusaders season-opener at the Hart Astro Turf Wednesday. With the win, Holy Cross starts the season 1-0 while the Minutemen drop to 0-1
Senior Patricia Sutton (Saratoga Spring, N.Y.) had two goals and one assist, junior Amy Archambault (West Hartford, Conn.) had one goal and one assist while freshman Megan Fenton (Bridgewater, N.J.) had her first collegiate assist.
The Minutemen were led by Kathleen Typadis who had two goals.
UMass scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of game and put three more in the back of the net to go into halftime with a 5-0 advantage over the Crusaders.
Holy Cross went into the second half on fire scoring the next five goals to get back into the game. Corkum scored the first goal for the Crusaders less than two minutes into the second half off an assist from Sutton. Sutton scored the next two goals with the first from Archambault and the second unassisted to make it 5-3 at 35:07. Archambualt was next with an unassisted goal at 39:15 to come within one of UMass. Corkum scored her second goal of the game to knot the match at five with just over 19 minutes left in the game. The Minutemen scored their only goal of the half before Corkum put away two more goals for the Crusaders. The first was off a free position to tie the game at six and the second was from freshmen Fenton to win the game with 1:16 remaining in the game.
Senior goalkeeper Megan Orr (Wilton, Conn.) made 17 saves for the Crusaders while UMass's Lauren McCarthy stopped 10 shots.
Holy Cross will play host to New Hampshire Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
