Women’s Lacrosse Falls To Navy, 8-6
WORCESTER, Mass. – With the score tied at 6-6 with 21:18 left in the second half, the Mids then netted the last two goals of the game as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to Navy, 8-6, on Saturday afternoon at Holy Cross Field in Patriot League action on Senior Day. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 5-11 overall (3-4 PL), while the Mids improve to 14-1 overall (6-1 PL).
The Crusaders were led by sophomore Kate Martino (Summit, N.J.) who tallied two goals and two assists for four points. The Mids were led by Kaitlan Moynihan who posted three goals and one assist for four points.
After Navy took an early 2-0 lead, the Crusaders answered with three straight goals. Freshman Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.) scored off a pass from Martino, while senior captain Sara Hennessey (Winchester, Mass.) tied the game with a goal. Junior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) then gave the Crusaders a 3-2 lead as she found the back of the net off an assist by Martino with 8:25 left in the first half. But a goal by Moynihan and two by Loren Generi moved Navy out to a 5-3 advantage. With 2:15 remaining, Martino scored on a free-position shot as the Crusaders trailed by a 5-4 score at the half.
With the Crusaders now behind 6-4 after a goal by Navy, Holy Cross tied the contest as Martino and Hennessey each found the back of the net. Sophomore Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.) posted an assist on Hennessey's goal. With 19:56 remaining, Aimee Gennaro posted a goal and then with 5:16 left Moynihan tallied her third goal of the contest for the 8-6 final score.
Senior goalie Sarah Weber (Summit, N.J.) made one save for the Crusaders, while Cassidy Chaney posted two saves for the Mids to improve to 4-0 on the season. Holy Cross outshot Navy, 14-11, while each team picked up 15 ground balls. The Mids secured nine draw controls and the Crusaders posted seven. The Mids went 1-1 on free-position shots and the Crusaders went 1-5.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 19 when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Patriot League opponent Lehigh in the regular season finale at 1:00 p.m.
Before the game, seniors Christina Amendola (Manorville, N.Y.), Corinne Caracausa (North Wales, Pa.), Hennessey, Maddie Parisi (Westport, Conn.) and Weber were honored in a ceremony.
Amendola has played in 36 career games with 24 starts. This season she has played in 13 games. Amendola was also named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2012 and 2013.
Parisi has played in 12 career games as a goalie. She has made 20 saves and has posted 11 ground balls.
Weber has played in 58 career games as a goalie. She earned 2012 second team All-Patriot League honors and has received Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week accolades twice. Her 24 wins rank second all-time in program history, while her 356 saves are sixth. Weber is a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy and was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2013.
Caracausa has played in 50 career games and is a team captain. She earned 2013 second team All-Patriot League honors as she ranked fourth in the league in ground balls per game. Caracausa is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades twice.
Hennessey has played in 62 career games and is a team captain. For her career she has 117 goals and 14 assists for 131 points. She also has 10 career game-winning goals. Her 117 goals are eighth all-time in program history and her 131 points are 10th. Also her 124 career draw controls are fourth all-time. She earned 2013 second team All-Patriot League honors, while she has been named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week twice and the Midfield Player of the Week once. Hennessey is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Holy Cross Leadership Academy. She has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll three times.
