Women’s Lacrosse Falls To Bucknell, 8-7

LEWISBURG, Pa. – With Holy Cross trailing the Bison 8-3 with 6:50 left in the second half, the Crusaders then netted four straight goals but were unable to score the equalizer as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to Bucknell, 8-7, on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field in Patriot League action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 5-9 overall (3-3 PL), while the Bison improve to 3-10 overall (2-4 PL). Sophomore Kate Martino (Summit, N.J.) led the Crusaders with three goals and two assists for five points, while Katelyn Miller also tallied three goals and two assists for five points to lead Bucknell.   

After Sam Rickels gave Bucknell an early 1-0 lead, junior Lissie Russert (Cincinnati, Ohio) found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 19:01 left in the first half. The Bison then scored four straight goals to move out to a 5-1 lead. Freshman Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.) then posted a goal as the Crusaders trailed by a 5-2 score at the half.    

After junior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) scored the first goal of the second half, Bucknell increased its lead to 8-3 with three straight goals. Martino netted two consecutive goals to make it a 8-5 contest with 1:02 left. Then the Crusaders cut the Bucknell lead to 8-6 with a goal by Ryan with 47 seconds remaining. Martino scored her third goal of the game for her second hat-trick of the season with just 29 seconds left. Ryan then won the ensuing draw control as Martino sent a shot wide with just seven seconds left. And then Russert fired a shot the was saved by Elizabeth Duswalt at the buzzer as Bucknell earned the 8-7 victory.

Senior goalie Sarah Weber (Summit, N.J.) made eight saves, while Duswalt posted nine saves. Sophomore Jersey Burns (Salem, N.H.) led the Crusaders with five ground balls. Bucknell outshot Holy Cross, 30-18, while the Bison picked up 19 ground balls and the Crusaders posted 16. Holy Cross secured nine draw controls and Bucknell had eight. The Crusaders went 1-1 on free-position shots and the Bison went 2-6.  

The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, April 9 when they host Harvard at Holy Cross Field at 4:30 p.m.
