Women’s Lacrosse Drops Contest To Fairfield, 8-1
WORCESTER, Mass. – Melanie Raso tallied three goals and one assist for four points for the Stags as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to Fairfield, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Holy Cross Field. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-4, while the Stags improve to 1-2.
Fairfield outscored the Crusaders by a 5-0 margin in the first half. Courtney Chmil scored the first two goals of the contest off free-position shots, while Raso increased the lead to 3-0 with her first goal of the contest. The Stags closed out the first half with a free-position goal by Julieanne Mascera and a goal by Raso to take a 5-0 advantage.
After a goal by Jenna Slowey gave Fairfield a 6-0 lead, senior captain Sara Hennessey (Winchester, Mass.) scored on a free-position shot to make it a 6-1 game. The goal extended Hennessey's goal scoring streak to 36 straight games. Raso and Chmil then each scored a goal for the 8-1 final score.
Senior goalie Sarah Weber (Summit, N.J.) allowed five goals and made one save as she played the first 24:26 of the game, while senior goalie Maddie Parisi (Westport, Conn.) allowed three goals and made two saves as she played the final 35:34 of the contest. Parisi also posted a team-best three ground balls. Chelsey Sidaras only allowed one goal and made eight saves for a .889 save percentage. Fairfield outshot Holy Cross, 16-14, while the Crusaders picked up 19 ground balls and the Stags posted 17. Holy Cross secured seven draw controls and Fairfield tallied four, while the Crusaders went 1-5 on free-position shots and the Stags went 3-4.
The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, March 2, when they play at Stetson in DeLand, Fla., at 1:00 p.m. This will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
