AMHERST, Mass. – Katie Ferris tallied two goals and four assists for six points for the Minutewomen as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to No. 11 UMass, 12-6, on Wednesday afternoon at McGuirk Stadium. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-2, while the Minutewomen improve to 3-0.
The Crusaders were led by junior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) who recorded her 12th career hat-trick. Ryan now has 81 goals and 17 assists for 98 career points.
After UMass took a 2-0 lead, Ryan scored on a free-position shot with 19:00 left in the first half. Then just 41 seconds later, freshman Avery Giorgio (Madison, Conn.) found the back of the net on a free-position shot for her first collegiate goal to tie the contest at 2-2. The Minutewomen then netted five straight goals to move out to a 7-2 advantage with 11:35 remaining. The Crusaders ended UMass' scoring streak with a goal by senior captain Sara Hennessey (Winchester, Mass.) to extend her goal scoring streak to 34 straight games. Hannah Murphy scored the last goal of the half on a free-position shot to give the Minutewomen an 8-3 lead.
UMass extended its lead to 11-3 by scoring the first three goals of the second half. With 12:07 left, Ryan found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore Kate Martino (Summit, N.J.), but UMass answered with a goal by Eileen McDonald to make it a 12-4 score. The Crusaders then netted the last two goals of the contest. Ryan scored her third goal of the game with a goal on a free-position shot, while sophomore Margie Smith (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored her first goal of the season for the 12-6 final score.
Senior goalie Sarah Weber (Summit, N.J.) made seven saves, while Rachel Vallarelli played 44:08 for UMass posting three saves and Leigh Henjes tallied one save in 15:52. UMass outshot Holy Cross, 22-13, while the Minutewomen picked up 15 ground balls and the Crusaders posted 14. UMass tallied 12 draw controls and Holy Cross secured eight, while the Minutewomen went 4-6 on free-position shots and the Crusaders went 3-6.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they play at Yale at 11:30 a.m.
