WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior captain Catherine Furman (Garden City, N.Y.) has been named the 2012 Patriot League Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year and earned first team All-Patriot League honors. Junior Taylor Zebrowski (Verona, N.J.), sophomore Sarah Weber (Summit, N.J.) and freshman Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) were selected to the second team.
Furman, who also earned first team All-Patriot League honors in 2011, is the first Crusader to ever be named the Defensive Player of the Year. The award was started in 1995. This season she has started in all 16 games and is the leader of a defense that has the second best overall goals against average in the Patriot League with a 10.94 average. She is tied for third on the team with 14 caused turnovers, while she also has 16 ground balls, six draw controls, one goal, one assist and two points. Furman's 42 career caused turnovers are tied for fifth all-time in school history. She has played in 65 career games with 69 ground balls, 40 draw controls, five goals, two assists and seven points. Furman has been a strong leader as she is a team captain and a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy.
Zebrowski earns All-League accolades for the first time in her career as she leads the team with a career-best 44 points, while she is second with 10 assists and third with a career-best 34 goals. She is also tied for third on the team with 15 draw controls. Her 3.14 points per game are eighth in the Patriot League and her 2.43 goals per game are ninth. Zebrowski has tallied at least one point in 21 straight games and has scored at least one goal in 18 consecutive contests. Zebrowski has 79 goals and 29 assists for 108 career points. She is the 18th player in program history to post 100 career points.
Weber also receives All-League honors for the first time. She leads the Patriot League in saves per game with 7.0 and is third in goals against average with an 11.05. Weber is second on the team with 28 ground balls. She has started in all 16 games with 112 saves and has a 9-6 record this season. Her nine wins are sixth all-time in a single-season at the school. She was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on April 16.
Ryan is the first Crusader freshman to earn All-League honors since the 2007 season. She is second on the team with 35 goals, tied for second with 41 points and tied for third with six assists. She leads the team with 61 draw controls for the season which are second all-time for a single-season at the school. Her 16 caused turnovers are second on the team and her 27 ground balls are third. Ryan's 35 goals and 41 points are the most for a Crusader freshman since the 2007 season when Megan Fenton posted 38 goals and 45 points. Ryan is third in the Patriot League and 26th nationally with 3.81 draw controls per game. Her 2.19 goals per game are tied for 10th in the league. Ryan was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on April 9.
The Crusaders (9-7 overall, 4-2 PL) are the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament in Annapolis, Md., and will take on No. 2 seed Colgate (6-10 overall, 4-2 PL) in the semifinals on Friday, April 27 at 7:45 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. No. 1 seed Navy (15-2 overall, 6-0 PL) will play No. 4 seed American (7-9 overall, 3-3 PL) at 5:00 p.m. in the first semifinal. The Crusaders have won eight of their last 11 games including three straight. The Crusaders' nine overall wins are their most since going 13-6 in 2007, while their four Patriot League victories are their most since going 5-0 also in 2007.
