WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross athletic director Richard M. Regan, Jr., and head women's lacrosse coach Stephanie Ridolfi have announced the Crusaders' 2012 schedule. Holy Cross is scheduled to play 17 regular season games, including eight at home. The Crusaders will take on three teams that made it to the 2011 NCAA Tournament (Massachusetts, Boston College and Navy).
Holy Cross will start the season on the road as the Crusaders will play against Massachusetts (Feb. 15), who has won three straight Atlantic 10 Tournament titles and went 17-3 overall last season. The Crusaders took UMass to overtime last year falling 12-10. Holy Cross will then play its first home game of the season versus Boston College (Feb. 17). Last year, the Eagles went 12-7 and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for their first-ever appearance. BC fell to eventual national champion Northwestern in the first round by an 11-8 score. The Crusaders will again hit the road to take on Bryant (Feb. 22) and Yale (Feb. 25). The Crusaders defeated Yale last year for the first time. Holy Cross will wrap up the first month of competition with a contest in Worcester versus Fairfield (Feb. 29).
Holy Cross will open the month of March when its travels to North Carolina to play second-year program High Point (March 5). The Panthers went 15-4 last year, which are the most wins ever for a first-year NCAA Division I program. The Crusaders start Patriot League action with a home game versus American (March 10), and then continue with home contests versus Brown (March 13) and Sacred Heart (March 18). Last season the Crusaders tied American for fourth place in the Patriot League standings with a 3-3 record but were edged out of the tournament because the Eagles won the regular season match-up between the teams. In 2010 both teams also had 3-3 records but the Crusaders qualified for the tournament by defeating the Eagles in the regular season. After traveling to Colgate (March 24), Holy Cross will take on UC Davis (March 26) in Worcester. The Crusaders will then go to Annapolis, Md., to meet two-time defending Patriot League Tournament champion Navy (March 31). Holy Cross defeated the Midshipmen for the first time last year with an 11-10 victory.
Holy Cross kicks off April with a game at Holy Cross Field versus Bucknell (April 7). The Crusaders will then play three straight away games versus Harvard (April 11), Lehigh (April 14) and Central Connecticut (April 18). The Crusaders conclude the regular season at home versus Lafayette (April 21).
The Patriot League Tournament will take place on April 27 and April 29, on the campus of the regular season champion. The top four teams in the final regular season standings will qualify for the tournament.
The Crusaders, who went 6-11 overall (3-3 Patriot League) last year, return 18 letterwinners and seven starters to a team that won three of their last four Patriot League games to end the season. Holy Cross will be led by senior captains Catherine Furman (Garden City, N.Y.) and Kat Sutton (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), and junior captain Maddie Carrellas (Middletown, R.I.).
