Worcester, Mass. - Senior Alysia Park (Dallas, Texas) scored two goals as RIT defeated the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team, 2-1, in its season-opener, Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center .
After a scoreless first-period, the Tigers found the back of the net late in the second on a power play goal by Park at 16:27. Kiersten Shinrock (Reston , Va.) and Kendra Breadlau (Pleasanton, Calif.) were credited with the assist.
Park scored again in the third at 17:57 from the inside-edge of the face-off circle with help from Sam Boscia (Bedford, N.Y.) and Bredlau, putting the score at 2-0.
With 1:47 left in the game the Crusaders pulled McCullion, creating a 6-on-3 opportunity as the Tigers placed two in the penalty box. Freshman Samantha Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) scored a power play goal with just 31 seconds remaining to spoil RIT's shutout. Rush scored from the top of the left face off circle, Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg Mass.) and Shauna Pires (Falmouth, Mass.) were credited with the assist.
Sophomore Nicki Werner (Quakertown, Pa.) made 39 saves for the Tigers for the win, while sophomore Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) halted 26 shots for Holy Cross.
With the loss Holy Cross falls to 2-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in ECAC East, while RIT improves to 1-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in ECAC East
The Crusaders return to the Hart Center on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. to take on RIT.
